Reading Assessments and Summer Reading Ideas

If you are a parent of a student in K-3, you are aware of the NEBRASKA READS ACT. The screener we use here at Diller-Odell Elementary is the MAP Reading Fluency Assessment. Your child has completed their end of the year test and will be bringing home their results.

For all students in Kindergarten, some in first, second, and third grade, there are “ZPD” (Zones of Proximal Development  scores for Foundational Skills.  This involves Phonics/Word Recognition and Phonological Awareness. Each strand is an important part. When weaved together, students become skilled at reading.

These scores reflect the important pieces on “The Road to Reading Words” path.

This path is how kids learn to read words and understand language.

With Summer soon upon us, what are some activities you could do to encourage your

Child to do with you that will help strengthen those “strands” developmental skills on their road to reading?  The link below will provide a number of great activities and even videos to guide

you.  There are some great links for grades K-3 from REL “Regional Educational Laboratory at Marzano Research”.

Another great resource is http://www.storylineonline.net. This is wonderful for audio recordings.

For those students that are building their fluency, when you read aloud with your child, you are modeling for them what fluent reading sounds like. No matter their age, it is important to read to your child.

Practice echo reading with your child. Read small chunks of words and use your finger to track what you are reading. After you read a chunk, have your child echo what you read using their finger to track words. Encourage your child to use the same speed and tone that you used.

It is okay to reread the same story again and again. Repeated reading helps your child become familiar with the words and sounds they make.

Encourage your child to read every day. We hope you take advantage of the summer reading program being offered here at the school this summer, and visit your local library!
