New Reading Screening Assessment at the Elementary School

It is wonderful to finally be back together with the students and staff in person!!  There are a few changes for 2020-2021.  Not only new rooms, new faces, and of course temperature checks, and some social distancing, but we have a new screener for our students.  We will not be using the DIBELS for elementary students.  This year at Diller-Odell, we are using the NWEA MAP Reading Fluency screener for our K-3 students.  This screener measures beginning foundational reading skills, like phonological awareness, phonics/word recognition, sentence reading fluency, comprehension, and oral reading for children who are ready. The benchmark test will be administered in the Fall, Winter, and Spring. The test is adaptive to each child. We will use these results to better understand your child’s individual needs and to help them grow as readers. It will show us what our learners can do and what they need to do yet. This information will also determine the IRIP, Individualized Reading Improvement Plans, which was put into law in 2018 by the state of Nebraska.  If your child is placed on a plan, you will be notified in writing within 15 days of the assessment.  A plan will be written and shared with you at Parent/Teacher conferences in September.

All K-6 students will also take the NWEA MAP Reading and Math Growth assessments in the Fall, Winter and Spring.  These tests will help our classroom teachers and other educational providers gain valuable information about each individual student, so that we can drive instruction and best serve each learner.

All students in grades 3-6 will also be taking the NWEA MAP Science assessments in the Fall and the Spring.

Your child’s teacher will share the results from these fall benchmark tests in September at Parent/Teacher conferences.  Thanks for sharing your child with us here at Diller-Odell.  We look forward to providing the best education for your child.
