Athletics and Academics

Did you know that the United States is one of the few countries that tie together athletics and activities within the school setting?  In most countries, students attend schools for academics and participate in sports on club or travel teams.  I believe we are fortunate to be able to link our athletics and activities to our school.  Connecting these to the academic curriculum as part of the school day completes the educational process.  The lessons learned and the work ethic that is built are important to the growth of the student-athletes. You hear it all the time, but it is true that these extra-curricular activities are “the other half of education”.

We here at Diller-Odell are very fortunate that our community support for our students and all their activities is great.  All of this help and support from our communities help our students to experience these activities.

I did find it interesting that in a recent study by the Aspen Institute, they found that the top 3 reasons that students play sports within the school setting are:  1) Have fun   2) Engage in exercise and 3) Spend meaningful time with their friends.  I do think that it is important for us all to realize these are the reasons that most students are participating in extra-curricular activities.  We can all work to make the involvement in activities of these students a positive and important part of the education process.
