JH Football Junior High Football Completes Successful Year

This year the Griffin Jr. High Football Team combined their talents with the Southern Jr. High Footballers to form a co-op team for the first time.  This idea came about since both schools have had fewer numbers in recent years, and it was hard to prepare during the season when there weren’t enough players to scrimmage effectively against.

9 boys from Diller-Odell, along with 9 boys and 2 girls from Wymore (20 total), made-up the Jr. High team.  Practices alternated between Odell & Wymore on a weekly basis.  Six games were scheduled…two at opposing team’s home venues, two in Wymore & two were held in Diller.  Uniforms & helmets were mixed together to form a black, red & white color scheme.

On the season the Jr. High won 5 games and lost only 1 (a close 8-6 loss to Johnson-Brock).  Teams defeated by the “Gr-aders” or

“R-iffins” were Pawnee City, Tri-County, Falls City Sacred Heart, Freeman & H-TR-S.  Coaches for the team were Devin Garcia & John Mohr from Diller-Odell, and Preston Jurgens & Chaysen Bednar from Southern.

Overall it was a very positive experience for the players, coaches, parents & communities!  If numbers continue to be low in future years, this season’s success has made it possible to combine schools in Jr. High Football once again.
