July 2015 Regular Board Minutes

Diller-Odell Regular BOE Meeting

July 13, 2015

President Gary Stohs called the meeting to order at 7:30 p.m. and recognized the posted Open Meetings Act document.  Present: Gary Stohs, Paul Kostal, Chad Lottman, Jill Scheele and Dean Engelman.  Absent: Toni Landenberger.  The absence was excused.  Administrators Mike Meyerle and Chris Prososki were present. Visitor Tom Faxon was also present.

Paul K. moved to approve the minutes as presented.  Chad L. seconded the motion.  MCU.

Mr. Prososki reported on upcoming events which included Administrator Days, the Annual Safety and Security meeting, Elementary Open House, and Seventh Grade Orientation.  He also noted that Faculty/Substitute handbooks have been updated.  He reported two goals for 2015-16 which are continued curriculum alignment and technology integration.

Tom Faxon spoke to the Board about removing the backstop near the water tower in Odell and using the fence material on the primary ball field in Odell, and making a batting and pitching cage.  The Board will consider the idea, but does not want to have the backstop removed if people are using the area.  The Board discussed removing the existing dirt and putting in fresh dirt if the backstop would stay in place, or planting the area to grass.  The Board will re-visit the subject at the August meeting.

The Board reviewed and discussed policies 6019-6039. Paul K. moved to adopt policies 6019-6039. Dean E. seconded the motion.  MCU.

Dean E. moved to reaffirm the Student Fee Policy for 2015-16.  Chad L. seconded the motion.  MCU.

Chad L. moved to reaffirm the Parental Involvement Policies for 2015-16.  Jill S. seconded the motion. MCU.

Mr. Meyerle reported that John Denner would be serving as assistant girls’ basketball coach.

Mr. Prososki reported on the upcoming Info Tech Night and that state and federal reporting is complete.

Mr. Meyerle reported on the status of summer facility projects.  He also discussed with the Board on moving to using e-meetings for organization and efficiency.  The Board was receptive to the change.

Dean E. moved to pay bills.  Paul K. seconded the motion.  MCU.

Mr. Meyerle inquired of the Board if they had any feedback on the possibility of building fitness centers in both Diller and Odell.  Board members noted that only positive feedback had been received thus far.  Mr. Meyerle will continue to gather information on the possible projects and is investigating community assistance in helping fund equipment for the centers.  A trip will be scheduled to visit the center in Pawnee City in the coming weeks.  Mr. Meyerle noted that the centers would not require an increase in taxes.  They would be paid for using Special Building money that is currently raised for building projects and improvement projects.

President Stohs shared with the Board a thank you letter from Mrs. Sharon Tegtmeier for her teaching experience at Diller-Odell Schools.

Chad L. moved to adjourn the meeting. Jill S. seconded the motion.  MCU.

President Gary Stohs adjourned the meeting at 8:37 p.m.

The next Regular Board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., August 12, 2015 at the Elementary School Media Center in Diller.    The Board of Education will usually adhere to the sequence of the published agenda, but reserves the right to adjust the order of items if necessary and may elect to amend the agenda as deemed necessary.
