October 2014 Regular Board Minutes

Diller-Odell Regular BOE Meeting

October 13, 2014

President Gary Stohs called the meeting to order at 7:32 p.m. and recognized the posted Open Meetings Act document.  Present: Gary Stohs, Toni Landenberger, Jill Scheele and Paul Kostal.  Absent: Dean Engelman and Chad Lottman.  Administrator Mike Meyerle was present.  Visitors present: Janelle Gegg, Brady McMurray, Josie Vitosh, Mackenzie Gydesen, Kendra Barnts and Bailey Schroeder.

Jill S. moved to approve the minutes as presented. Paul K. seconded the motion.  MCU.

Mrs. Janelle Gegg and some students that attended the trip to Mexico last summer shared some of their experiences with the Board.  The trip was successful and enjoyed by all.  Mrs. Gegg thanked the Board for the support of the trip.

There was not a student report on activities.  Jill S. noted the success of the Diller-Odell Range Judging team.  Mr. Meyerle also noted that it has been a busy start to the school year with trips and activities, and also mentioned the success of the softball, volleyball and football teams thus far.

Mr. Prososki had a written report distributed to the Board.

The Board reviewed and discussed policies 4001-4018 but took no action since two Board members were absent.  The policies will be reviewed during the November Board meeting as well as policies 4019-4036.

Mr. Meyerle provided the Board a preliminary school calendar for 2015-2016.  It was reviewed and a calendar will be adopted at a future meeting.

Mr. Meyerle noted that Mr. Arnold would be the Assistant Girls Basketball Coach this coming season, and that it would be necessary to find an additional JH volleyball coach for next fall as the numbers are too high for one coach.

Chad L. arrived at the meeting at 8:20 p.m.

Toni L. moved to accept the track bid from Hall Brothers and authorize Mr. Meyerle and legal counsel to negotiate a contract.  Paul K. seconded the motion. Voting Yes: Chad L. Paul K. Gary S. and Toni L.  Voting Against: Jill S.

Chad L. moved to approve the use of the Special Building Fund for the track project.  Toni L. seconded the motion.  Voting Yes: Toni L. Chad L. Paul K. and Gary S.  Voting Against: Jill S.

Mr. Meyerle noted that he had made reservations for three Board members and himself for the upcoming NASB convention.  He also noted that the school would begin using a new accounting system.

A discussion was held on taking off school time for various student activities.  The Board and Mr. Meyerle want students to be able to attend various activities as spectators if the students provide proper parental permission to do so.  Mr. Meyerle noted that it is not possible to cancel classes for all state activities.  In the case of calling off school for activities, it will be a decision by Mr. Meyerle on a case by case basis.

Toni L. moved to pay bills.  Jill S. seconded the motion.  MCU.

Gary S. noted that Mr. Meyerle’s annual evaluation as Superintendent would be done at the November meeting.

Jill S. moved to adjourn the meeting. Paul K. seconded the motion.  MCU.

President Gary Stohs adjourned the meeting at 9:00 p.m.

The next Regular Board meeting is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., November 10, 2014 at the High School Media Center in Odell.    The Board of Education will usually adhere to the sequence of the published agenda, but reserves the right to adjust the order of items if necessary and may elect to amend the agenda as deemed necessary.
