Independent Living Cooking Unit

Students in Ms. Smith’s Independent Living class study a wide range of topics.  The most current topic was cooking. They learned how to look at labels and read information, read recipes and learn the terminology that goes along with them, and then pick a recipe that they wanted to make.  The students created a shopping list and then went to Walmart and bought the ingredients needed to make their dish. They learned how to compare products at Walmart and find the best buy. Once they bought their items, if the student was a senior, they created invitations and got to invite one staff member and one friend to their luncheon. The students prepared their lunch which consisted of a house salad, chicken alfredo, mixed vegetables, garlic bread, and peanut butter brownies. According to many of them in the class, this has been their favorite project up to this point.
