The Brew Crew
Diller-Odell High School now has a new business that was started and being ran by a few select students. The Brew Crew was developed by one of Ms. Smith's applied mathematics classes. This company was designed based off a need for students to apply math skills to real life situations. After talking with the students about it, we decided to give it a try. We researched all the equipment and supplies we would need to get started and came up with a list of inventory and approximate prices. The students also prepared a survey for the staff and asked what products they would be most interested in. The results were amazing, they desired - coffee, tea, cappuccino, hot chocolate, with toppings such as marshmallows, whipped cream, and can by either drizzled with caramel or chocolate syrup.
The students researched names for the company but the staff made the final decision with the name they liked best for our company. We didn't have the money to start the business, so the students prepared a proposal and then presented it to Mr. Meyerle, asking for a loan through the school to get us started. After the business was approved, and with the help of Mrs. Coufal, the students prepared several posters using technology to market the business, developed a Brew Crew order form, prepared online financial records, and practiced counting money back so when customers paid, they knew how to give correct change back. Once a staff member buys their first beverage, they receive a punch card. After a staff member buys 5 drinks, they will get their 6th one free.
The Brew Crew is up and running and the students are proud of their business. They are in charge of all aspects of the company. They have paid back their first loan payment, have seen a profit in only 5 days of business, are learning how to treat customers, work with money and applying it to a real life situation. At this point The Brew Crew is only open to High School staff, but we hope in the future to open it up the other businesses in the community. Each student has a specific role in the company which models a President, Vice-President, Secretary, and Treasurer.
