ESU5 Summer Science Camp 2016

On June 28th and 29th, around 60 4th-6th graders from Southern and Diller-Odell participated in the 2016 ESU5 Summer Science Camp held at Diller-Odell Elementary.  During the 2 days the students were given the opportunity to lean about different areas of science.  This year the main focus was Physical Science and Science Inquiry.  On the first day there were 4 stations.   Egg Crash (students had to purchase supplies in order to secure their egg to their car and survive a crash against another team.) Snap Circuits (students built complete circuits.  These included making a light bulb light up, shooting a disk in the air, and even making an FM radio.)  Bottle Rockets (students created a bottle rocket that was shot into the air using water and air for fuel.  They have to see how long they could get it to stay in the air. Some even figured out how to build a parachute to help them.)  The last one was Robot Soccer, (students were given a box and had to create a way to push balls into a goal using a remote control car.)

The second day there were another 4 stations.  All of the students were given a vote to see what station they wanted to do again and the Egg Crash won, so they did that one again.  Flying Drones (students used an iPad app to create a code to control a flying drone.  They had different obstacles they had to complete.)  Computer Station (The students were given time to play some physics games.  These worked on creative thinking as well and just fun.)  The last one was Egg Drop (students were given materials to create a structure to catch a falling egg.

All of the students enjoyed their 2 days.  Thank you to Mr. Larsen, Mrs Kostal, and seniors Paige Vitosh and Carson Ebeling for helping.  We would also like to thank the ESU5 Science guys and for giving the students the opportunity to experience Science with these hands on and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) concepts.
