Mock-Election Day
On Nov. 3 (Election Day), the Diller-Odell Secondary School held their own mock-election. The election, itself, was conducted by the Modern Problems Class, but all 7-12 students who registered to vote in school could cast their ballots.
47 students & 3 staff members participated. This was a 100% turnout for those who registered. 48% of the total 7-12 student body registered. This percentage was lower compared to the mock-election which was held in 2016.
The Modern Problems class organized the election by putting up posters, helping students to register & making the school aware of some of the issues that would appear on the ballot (the same ballot used in the official Nebraska election). The class then ran the election on Nov. 3. The Modern Problems class then counted ballots & posted the results.
The results of the D-O election were similar to the official election results seen in Southeast Nebraska. Ben Sasse & Adrian Smith were re-elected to Congress. D-O students voted in favor of Initiative 428, as well as FOR the gambling Initiatives 429, 430 & 431. President Trump received 82% of the student vote while Vice-President Joe Biden received 18% of the school vote. Other items on the mock-election ballot were for Diller and Odell Village Board seats as well as the Diller-Odell School Board.
All-in-all the students seemed to enjoy conducting & participating in the election. Hopefully they got a taste of how local & national elections are carried-out within our nation.
