Regular Meeting
Minutes December 12, 2011
President Gary Stohs called the meeting to order at 7:37 P.M. and recognized the posted Open Meeting Act document. Present: Dean Engelman, Gary Stohs, Paul Kostal, Toni Landenberger, John Knabe, and Student Council Rep, Cassey Lottman. Absent: Chad Lottman. Administrators Darrell Vitosh and Michael Meyerle were present. There were no visitors. Secretary John K. read the minutes of the November 14, 2011 regular meeting. John K. moved to accept minutes with corrections. Paul K. seconded the motion. MCU Chad L. arrived at 8:00.
Cassey L. reported that the choir performed at the Pioneer Conference Vocal Clinic and the junior high boys basketball season has started. DOSADA had a Halloween Party at the high school and earned over $1,000 with their Scentsy sales project. NHS inducted new members and collected 560 coats, gloves, and hat items to be divided between Fairbury and Beatrice. The senior government classes displayed a flag poster for Veteran’s Day; students signed names of veterans they new. Seniors and parents attended a FAFSA meeting. FBLA had a Christmas party at the Stoh’s house and 16 students attended a Speech Team meeting. The District FFA leadership contest has been postponed until 1-11-2012.
Principal Meyerle discussed options for curriculum changes for 2012-13. He reported on three programs addressing student behavior and expectations. Stephanie Wells spoke to students about emotional well-being, Karen Hasse spoke to parents, patrons, and students about bullying from a legal perspective, and students watched a media presentation from Motivational Media. Cameras were discussed as an option to monitor student behaviors on our busses. Mrs. Coufal is updating the looks and options on our school Website.
Toni L. moved to amend Student Discipline policy 5100 to include activity suspension as a possible consequence for student misconduct and possible suspension for violation of anti-bullying policy. Paul K. seconded the motion. MCU
The Board discussed the merits of having a Spanish teacher on staff versus the course delivery through the distance-learning network and will continue to explore the topic. The Board was updated on the progress for hiring a new principal. Possible solutions for replacement of the aging hot water heating system were presented.
Chad L. moved to continue the Softball Coop with Southern High School for 2012 and 2013. Dean E. seconded the motion. MCU
Board committees discussed snow removal and winterization of outdoor concession facilities. The Board is appreciative of the efforts of our coaches for the Saturday morning basketball sessions.
Superintendent Vitosh informed the Board members of filing dates for incumbent members seeking reelection in Ward 2. Teachers and paras will attend a “Love and Logic” staff development with the Southern staff on January 4, 2012 in Wymore. The school notification system, AlertNow, was tested on Monday, December 5 and will be used for school closing information along with the usual radio and TV announcements.

Dean E. moved to adjourn. Toni L. seconded the motion. MCU. President Gary Stohs adjourned the meeting at 9:03 P.M. The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for 7:30, January 16, 2012, at the elementary school media center in Diller.
