Second Semester Keeps Music Students Busy
Second semester always seems to fly by for students and teachers, especially the music students. On January 14, Southern High School hosted the Pioneer Conference Honor Band. Students participating were: Morgan, Stephanie, Neleigh, and Allison on flute, Kelsay and Kyleigh on clarinet, Ashtyn on bass clarinet, Melina on trumpet, Connor on trombone, and Brianna on baritone. The clinician was Roger Thaden, a twice-retired Nebraska band teacher. Songs performed were: Joy by Ticheli, Midnight Fair by Bobrowitz, On a Hymnsong of Phillip Bliss by Holsinger, Selections from: The Greatest Showman arranged by Murtha, and Bandology by Osterling.
On Monday, February 25, freshman and sophomore choir students traveled to Tecumseh and participated in the 26th Annual Freshmore Clinic at Johnson County Central High School with clinicians Kevin Boesiger and June Bowers. Diller-Odell was one among eleven other schools that attended. Participating for Diller-Odell were: Mallory, Allison, Jadyn, Rachel, Brianna, Kennedy, Kim, Maddy, Adrien, and Bradley.
MUDECAS Music Contest was hosted by Diller-Odell on Tuesday, March 19. Attending the contest besides Diller-Odell were Tri-County, Freeman, Palmyra/Bennett, and Meridian. The band and choir performed and each received a II rating. Student performers with a I rating were: Morgan- flute solo, Bradley- vocal solo, Melina-vocal solo, and Allison-vocal solo. Students receiving a II rating were: Ashley-alto sax solo, Stephanie-flute solo, Melina and Connor on a trumpet and trombone duet, Bradley-piano solo, Kyleigh-vocal solo, and Jadyn-vocal solo.
MUDECAS contest is a great contest to attend because the judges will give helpful critiques on how to improve your performance for the District Music Contest.
In December, several junior high students auditioned for the Meridian Junior High Honor Clinic. The clinic has a honor choir and honor band. Selected for the honor band was 7th grader Preston on baritone. He attended an all day band clinic on Friday, April 5th and then performed a concert that evening with guest clinician Dr. Duane Bierman from UNK.
District Music Contest was hosted by Fairbury High School on Friday, April 25. The band and choir performed and received a II rating. Students receiving a I rating were: Kyleigh-vocal solo, and Melina and Connor on a trumpet and trombone duet. Receiving a II rating were: Morgan-flute solo, Jadyn-vocal solo, Allison-vocal solo, Bradley-vocal solo, Melina-vocal solo, Adrien-vocal solo, and Kelsay-clarinet solo.
To end the school year the high school students will have a Fine Arts night on Monday, April 29. Solos performed at contest will begin at 6:15 and art work will also be displayed. The concert will begin at 7:00 pm.
K-6 will hold their music concert on Monday, May 6, at 7:00 pm.
5th and 6th grade will perform their dessert theatre production on Monday, May 13. Tickets available only from 5th and 6th graders.
