Project Based Learning Through Science
article written by Ms. Reba Hestermann
As a 5th and 6th grade science teacher I am always looking for ways to engage and challenge my students to learn new concepts. In my classroom I use Project Based Learning. With this type of learning the project is framed for students to solve a meaningful problem to solve or answer a question, at the appropriate level of challenge. These projects feature real world context, tasks and tools, or speaks to students personal concerns.
Why is PBL learning great for students? I have seen it instantly engage my students in a rigorous, extended process by asking questions about a problem they are solving. I am able have them explore a concept and figure them out on their own and make some decisions about a project so they are able to have choice and voice which is super powerful. I engage my students in many STEM activities, which is very open-ended, so students are problem solving and applying the concepts they have learned in class. Too many students are unprepared for the modern economy and the challenges of the 21st century. Project Based Learning prepares students for academic, personal, and career success, and forces my students to rise to the challenges of their lives and the world around them.
