Sixth Grade Participates in Food Smart Families Program

The 6th grade class participated in the 4-H Food Smart Families program taught by Kayla Colgrove, Nebraska Extension Educator, on Friday afternoons. The 4-H Food Smart Families program equips youth and their families to make healthy living part of their everyday lives through nutrition education, cooking skills and food budgeting skills. We had fun learning about healthy eating and preparing recipes during each class. Sixth graders learned about drinking low-fat milk and water instead of sweetened drinks, coloring their plate with vegetables and fruits, making half their grains whole, eating healthier fast foods by eating fewer high-fat and high-sugar foods, and powering up their day by eating breakfast. At the end of the program, each participant received ingredients to make two recipes at home with their families. Nebraska 4-H and UnitedHealthcare made this program possible by expanding their partnership to help fight hunger by promoting nutrition education and food budgeting. The program ended on Tuesday, April 25th with a family celebration reception after their DARE Graduation.
